TMaaS Replicator Cities have been announced
In February 2019, TMaaS launched a call to cities worldwide to apply to take part in the TMaaS Replicator City Programme. Three cities were given the opportunity to work together with the TMaaS team to create their version of the TMaaS dashboard, adapted to their own situation and needs. The selection of the cities was announced today: Antwerp, Durán (Ecuador) and the Southwark district of London are able to join the TMaaS programme for more than a year – free of charge.
TMaaS is very pleased to work with three very different cities, each with their own specific wishes and challenges. Now that Antwerp has joined TMaaS, the project can expand further into Flanders. Southwark is another European city that is already highly developed in terms of data. And finally, Durán gives TMaaS the opportunity to expand globally. This city also has interesting mobility challenges, but lacks an abundance of data sources.
Antwerp is strongly committed to multimodality as part of its “Smart Ways to Antwerp” and “The Transport Region 2030” plans. The city wants to encourage the use of alternative means of transport to the car. Thanks to the TMaaS customizable data framework, it has set itself a mission of providing citizens with relevant traffic information before the start of their journey. In addition to car-related data, the city also aims to gain a stronger grip on travel behaviour via all other modes of transport. Although TMaaS is building two user dashboards for Ghent, one for traffic managers and one for residents, Antwerp aims to focus primarily on the platform for residents.
The Ecuadorian city of Durán is looking primarily for a solution to traffic congestion and waiting times. However, it also wants to improve the quality of public transport (in particular buses). Visualising current quality and problems could be used as an argument to convince bus companies to start using new routes, for example. Not much data is available in Durán yet. The development of data sources is the first challenge that needs to be tackled therefore.
The mayor of Greater London has laid out the outlines of his mobility vision for the entire region. This vision focuses on reducing accidents to a minimum, cutting emissions and improving the efficient use of public spaces including the highway for Southwark Central. London already collects large volumes of data, but Southwark does not make sufficient use thereof for real-time monitoring. By integrating its data into the platform for traffic managers, Southwark aims to improve its grip on the current challenges of traffic flow and poor road safety.
During the first months of the Replicator City programme, TMaaS will be working with the three Replicator Cities to screen the available mobility data in their city and define the use cases. This is followed by a phase software development, testing and feedback, the final result of which is a dashboard tailored to each city. TMaaS is curious to see how the cities and their residents subsequently work with the platforms.
