Meet Evert, our traffic engineer

As a Traffic Engineer at Be-Mobile, Evert Gellynck is always on the lookout for new, innovative ideas and solutions. We’re curious to find out what Evert and his colleagues are up to this month!

What are you working on right now?

We’re making a long list of all the possible data streams that can be useful for the TMaaS platform. Think of a large matrix where we put all possible data from our partners and external parties in, related to mobility and smart cities.

Data research

First, we make a long list of possible data streams that the TMaaS platform would receive 24/7. We’ve divided this list into four categories.

  1. Anything that has to do with traffic data like travel times, traffic jams and incidents on the road,… This information is coming form Floating Car data (FCD) and vehicle detection loops.
  2. Parking data: park & ride information, practical info relating to the actual parking facilities and parking availability of all public parkings in Ghent
  3. Traffic Events: Road works, object on the road, accidents,… this information is obtained from: travelers alerting by social media notifications: as the developer of Touring Mobilis, a free traffic information app, Be-Mobile receives messages from users when problems are happening on their route.
  4. Public transport: Time schedules (+ delays) from NMBS and De Lijn

Shortlist of TMaaS data

We aim to work with the highest quality data only and will therefore be comparing different data providers. We also need to take into account the wishes of our future users. The assessment of the data overview will result in a shortlist of data streams that the TMaaS developers will start working with.

Data sources

TMaaS will be working with data coming from our partners (Tom Tom, Be-Mobile, Stad Gent, Waylay) and if the research shows that there’s a need for more data that is currently not available within our partnership, we will investigate the options for acquiring these data.

As an R&D developer, I keep my eyes and ears open for trends and developments happening elsewhere in the industry. I believe that this way of working is critical for success and important when you want to innovate and stay ahead of your competitors.

What are you looking forward to in this project?

“I can’t wait to see the dashboard when it comes live and we’re going to test it with real users in Ghent.”

How do you go to work?

My daily route to work is by car. However, when I’m working at our co-working space in Ghent I take the train, and walk to the office from there.
